The answer to the question, “Why choose Real Estate as a career” receives a variety of responses that interviewers have heard all to often “I’m a people person”, “The money is great”, “ I can choose to work the hours I want to work”, “I like the freedom” and the list goes on and on. However, do you really know if you have what it takes?  The answer to this question is not carved in stone.  Various assessments may give you an indication of your individual suitability to the real estate profession, however, there is no magical formula. 

Characteristics to Consider
 

1.  Your Personality is Crucial.  Are you a sociable person?  Are you outgoing?  (An extravert)  Do you enjoy being in the company of others?  Are you assertive?  Can you express your opinions and feelings with confidence and clarity?

 2.   Are you Achievement oriented?  In other words, are you a person that sets goals and stretches to achieve them?

3.  Would you be considered, dependable?  Individuals that are focused, organized, and reliable have this characteristic.  At this point, you may be performing your own self-analysis.  Do I have what it takes?  Personality characteristics, it’s who we are.  These have been developed over a long period of time and cannot be expected to change overnight.

The Sales Process
 

People have said, “Sales is Sales” & “Once a salesman, always a salesman”.   Although thise may be true,  the very nature of today’s society dictates an extremely high level of service, (before, during and after the sale); technological expertise (both generally and specifically) and professionalism, all of which encompasses a variety of other disciplines (legal, construction, environmental, financial).  Considering this, “Sales Ability” is important; but in most cases is a trainable asset.  Most people can be taught how to qualify prospects and how to develop a working relationship with the ones that will ultimately promote your business.  Another important and trainable asset is that of listening and being able to comprehend what a client is telling you they need.  The actual “sales process” is a very learnable skill.  Being able to negotiate a client through a mine-field of decisions at the right time, is an art unto itself.  Knowing the right questions to ask, at the right time, to be able to “close” the sale is also a skill that can be taught.  Being able to challenge questions, overcome resistance, recognize buying signals and respond appropriately are all important skills that can be learned to the betterment of the skilled real estate sales professional.
